Hi Mallory and Sue! the blue color comes from encasing a reduced color like shiny Triton or Aurae.
To get the blue under the encasing, reduce the bead until the glass is shiny, then encase as quickly as possible so you don't have to put the reduced bead back in the flame and lose the reduction.
